The History of Our Name

The picture above is of a newspaper clipping that was glued to the inside cover of John Cross' Bible. The clipping contains a poem written by Ray Ralston of Del Rapids, South Dakota to Mrs. Alice Cross on a Mother's Day. The poem reads:

“I know of a little country church,
builded by pioneers,
it could hardly be called a cathedral
though it has served for many a year.
Soon after those good people had settled
on that prairie sod
they felt a need of a house,
in which to worship God.

A little Miss was born
in that neighborhood,
to help to brighten the way,
God gave her a disposition for doing good
to all who came her way.
So when this church was finished
and those people toward it trod,
they could think of no better name for it
than the Alice Church of God.

Alice was the name
of this little Miss
who so faithfully served them then.
She still leads a life of service.
Her last name used to be Lynn.
It's to her my memory goes back to,
on this joyous Mothers' Day.
I have no mother living.
This little tribute to pay,
so if you will accept this,
not just as applesauce,
I would like to offer this token
to dear Mother Cross.

The Alice Church of God was organized in 1866
